I was admiring the trees as I drove in this morning. It’s the pinnacle of fall here now. The trees are insanely gorgeous, the weather is still mild. Soon it will be cold and the trees will be bare and dead, but for now it’s just picture book pretty, lovely like a never ending story of autumn.
I feel out of sorts today. Like literally unsorted. I’m not sure where I should be. It’s grey and rainy out now. My work email doesn’t seem to be functioning. I’m not getting any personal email, voicemail or text messages this morning. No one seems to be updating any of the blogs I read. It’s enough to make a girl wonder if she exists at all. Maybe I am trapped in some awful limbo where one refreshes and refreshes everything on the internet and nothing ever changes.
Per a conversation I had with K last night, I present you a pointless poll.

Maybe it’s because I grew up reading the British classics, but “gray” always always ALWAYS looks like a misspelling to me. And harsh, somehow, where ‘grey’ is smoky-soft, cloudy and quiet.

“Gray” is like The Old Gray Mare and mediocrity, but “Grey” is Jane Eyre and darkness and mystery.

Yes, I told K last night that I was sure that grey was a much, much more attractive color than gray.

Precisely.

Grey to me is the fine line between light and dark that isn’t really a line at all, but more of an amazingly subtle expanse of everything and nothing.
Gray is just something you cover with hair dye.

I always feel like “gray” is a Crayola color, while grey is something that actually exists in nature and is complex. Your description is better, but at least I’m glad that someone else understands my sentiment.

Maybe it’s a regional thing? I grew up with “gray” being the more common spelling. But, now that I’m on the east coast, I prefer “grey.”

I like them both, but I had a teacher whose name was Mrs. Grey, so I tend to usually go with “gray”.

I like grey. It is much prettier.

What everyone else said, and also throwing in that I detest that my spell check tags “grey” as incorrect. Fuck you, ‘merican spell check.

I chose “gray” but strangely enough, I like both. My brain likes each one in different contexts…not that I could elaborate on that right now.
